Jesy Nelson, 28, is a singer, who won The X Factor in 2011 as part of the U.K. girl band Little Mix, she and her bandmates instantly taking them from complete unknown to celebrities. She has revealed that she suffered from online bullying and drove her to try to kill herself. BBC Three documentary, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, revealed she tried to commit suicide following a horrific battle with depression.

As soon as Jesy appeared on TV, the bullying began. She suffered from the comments fans left on YouTube video of their final performance, nearly every comment was about her appearance. Fans commented, ‘She’s a fat ugly rat’; ‘How has she got in this girl group?’; ‘How is the fat one in this?’. It was like an addiction for her by constantly checking the internet for more negative comments about herself. She even had eating disorder and mental health issues. She didn’t realize she had an eating disorder, but she did notice she was loosing weight. She was definitely affected by trolling on the way she looked. However, it was not only herself being affected by cyberbullying, but her mom, her sister, her bandmates, and her relationships. She also got messages from random people, she quotes, “I had about 101 Facebook messages in my inbox, and the first one that came up was from some random man, saying: ‘You are the ugliest thing I’ve seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die’.” Jesy's bandmates said trolls took away her love for pop and performing. In 2013, Little Mix returned to The X Factor stage for a guest performance, the comments she got led her to lose her will to live and tried to take her own life. She tried to taker her own life by going to kitchen and taking as many tablets as she could. She was heartbroken and cried all the time, even though pop and performing were everything she always wanted to do. She was taken to the hospital and luckily wasn't any problem following her attempt to kill herself.

She was living her dream with the fame, but couldn't ignore the sufferings that she got that she hated it so much at the same time. She did not want to express that she is unhappy about what she's going through because comments got worse if she showed she was upset about it. Then she thought it would be better to ignore everything. After eight years on from when the bullying began, she's feeling much stronger, and has changed her mindset about the people behind the insults. She though everyone hated her but changing her mindset worked well, she says, "But no, actually, they're doing it because they feel bad about themselves. So now when I look at trolls being nasty, I feel a bit sorry for them. The only way I can understand it is that being nasty makes them feel better in themselves. I didn't have the mindset to think like that back then – I wish I did.". She even stopped using Twitter, which lead her to feel a lot mentally stronger and happier.

Now she overcame, she quoted “Don’t get me wrong I still get quite horrible comments but I just … mentally I know how I feel about myself and that’s the biggest thing that I have overcome — that feeling in myself and feeling happy but that’s all because I got help and I spoke about it.”. Deciding to stop using social media accounts was the right choice she made for herself and mental health problems she suffered from the comments. She was facing the cyberbullying and trolling and blocking those who made her unhappy to make herself happier and stronger.
